Background

Affective design of products and systems has emerged as a promising and dynamic field of research and application since the works of Mitsuo Nagamachi on Kansei Engineering (Ergonomics), Martin Helander and Peter Hancock of theories and methods in Affective Design (Human Factors), Rosalind Picard on Affective Computing (Computer Science), Patrick Jordan, Don Norman and Pieter Desmet on Emotional Design (Product Design). Recently, citarasa engineering, a novel user-centred approach to design (Khalid, 2007) integrates cognitive and affective requirements of customers.

In addition to research and development, several thematic conferences and dedicated workshops have been organized globally, such as Affective Human Factors Design 2001 (Singapore), Emotions and Design, 2003, 2006 (UK), Emotional Design 2004 (USA), and so forth.

Publications on Affective design have also appeared in journals such as TIES, Applied Ergonomics, and Research in Engineering Design, and books authored by ergonomists, product designers, engineers, and computer scientists.

Given the growing global and multi-disciplinary interests, there is a need for the international ergonomics community to integrate the many threads of interdisciplinary issues underlying this domain, from theories, methods to application.

Therefore, the prime goal of Affective Ergonomics Technical Committee (TC) is to develop and promote the field of research and application through collaborative initiatives between researchers and practitioners.

Objectives

The initiatives will be implemented through the following objectives:

1. To document and develop theories and methods in Affective Ergonomics for design purposes;

2. To integrate research and practices in design of affective user interfaces;

3. To participate and/or organize collaborative events for researchers and practitioners in academia and industry to share solutions, such as Emotion & Design Conference;

4. To publish works in the form of practical solutions for application in different domains from consumer goods to medical equipment.

1. Literature reviewDocument theories, methods for measurement or affect, emotion.WG1Collection of 30 papers July 2007Booklet - December 2007
2. StandardsReview of user interface standards for affective designWG2Principles for affective design - Dec 2008Guidelines for ISO consideration - March 2009
3. Symposium and PanelPresentation of research papers and panel discussion on common themeAll5 papers and 1 panel with 5 panelists2 sessions on Affective Ergonomics at the IEA Congress 2009

The mode of communication is through generic office applications, such as email, and skype. In addition, a dedicated ftp site will be created for members to post their discussions and works.

To kick-off, the members will organize thematic sessions at major conferences (e.g. Emotion & Design, HFES, etc.) to raise awareness and to recruit new members. A session on “Affective design with computing systems” has been organized at the WWCS 2007 conference in Stockholm, May 21, 2007.
