Objectives

  • Promote the recognition and development of healthcare ergonomics as a specialist area of ergonomics
  • Plan and develop paper sessions, symposia and group meetings on healthcare ergonomics at IEA congress and other conferences
  • Raise the profile of healthcare ergonomics by creating an inclusive forum to represent the diversity of research and practice interests
  • Liaise with other professional organisations to enhance the inclusive base of this group

Structure

Run as a network

Action Plan

Journals/Books:

  • A special edition of Ergonomics on patient safety was published in 2006, with 12 papers Editors: Sue Hignett, Dave Stubbs and Judy Edworthy.
  • Further special issues for Ergonomics are in discussion.
  • A special edition of Applied Ergonomics is planned for 2007. Papers were invited. Editors: Pascale Carayon and Peter Buckle.
  • Prof. Pascale Carayon has published a book entitled Handbook of HFE in Healthcare and Patient Safety which includes contributions from a number of group members.

Collaboration with other TCs

A collaborative group has been convened with TC13 (Musculoskeletal disorders). This is a European venture and includes members from 13 EU member states. The group is called the European Panel on Patient Handling Ergonomics (EPPHE). The next meeting will be in conjunction with ISSA conference in Athens, 2007.

A close link has been established with ODAM and HETC9 for Patient Safety issues, resulting in shared symposia at IEA2006.

Symposia for 2007:
PREMUS 2007 (USA) – symposium accepted with 6 HETC9 members
ISSA 2007 (Greece) – Individual members submitting papers.

Q: How can a TC promote the IEA Triennial Congress
?

This was achieved very successfully through HETC9 for IEA2006 resulting in a full stream on Healthcare Ergonomics and Patient Safety organized as a series of symposia.
