About ACE

The Association of Canadian Ergonomists/Association Canadienne d’Ergonomie (ACE) is the voice of ergonomics in Canada. Established in 1968, ACE is a bilingual, professional association of individuals and organizations with a common interest in advancing ergonomics and human factors knowledge and practice. It consists of five regional chapters and has members from within Canada as well as internationally. Currently there are 581 ACE members in a variety of categories including corporate members, regular members, students, affiliates, fellows, and retirees. Anyone can be a member of ACE if they have an interest in ergonomics and human factors and our members come from a variety of disciplines

Activities

ACE provides services, professional development, and networking opportunities to its members through an annual conference, webinars, and regional events. The annual conference is held in various regions throughout the country or virtually. The 2023 annual conference is planned for the fall of 2023 in Ontario Canada. ACE also raises awareness of ergonomics and human factors to the public through various articles and interviews written by its members as well as publishing a national yearly Ergonomics Canada Magazine which is available in print or online (https://www.ergonomicscanadadigital.com/acea/0022_annual_2022_/MobilePagedArticle.action?articleId=1800337#articleId1800337). Additionally, ACE also works with other professional organisations within Canada as knowledge transfer partners with the objective of sharing up-to-date research and information about best practice in the field of ergonomics.

Furthermore, while it is not involved in the certification process, ACE promotes and supports the certification of professional ergonomists which is conducted by the College for the Certification of Canadian Professional Ergonomists (CCCPE). In Canada, the College for the Certification of Canadian Professional Ergonomists (CCCPE) has a rigorous process to ensure that professional competencies align with the International Ergonomics Association (IEA). This national certification known as a Certified Canadian Professional Ergonomist (CCPE) was developed with the support of ACE to protect the public. Having a certified ergonomist helps users of ergonomics/human factors services identify those who have the necessary training and experience and ensures the quality of practice among the CCPE. Currently there are 200 certified ergonomists practicing in Canada as well as an additional 166 associate ergonomists who met the ergonomics/human factors education requirements to move towards the CCPE designation but may not have enough practical experience to meet the standards for the professional competencies. ACE was most recently the host of the IEA triennial congress for 2021. Much of our volunteer efforts went to the planning of this conference. Ian Noy and his team put together a fantastic event and set the precedence for a virtual or hybrid event.

Our membership numbers are holding steady over the last couple of years at just over 500. We’ve approached several Knowledge transfer partners and established several memorandums of understanding for the sharing of information and webinars. Our council is working hard at updating our website, increasing public awareness and building our partnerships with corporate members.

Through the pandemic, most activities were pivoted to fully virtual, and increased webinar sessions.

Membership

Anyone can be a member of ACE if they have an interest in ergonomics and human factors. Being an ACE member does not mean someone is a certified ergonomist.
