News from Advisory Group on Standardization – Activity report of TC 159/SC 1 ‘General ergonomics principles’

ISO/TC 159/SC 1 has recently published two standards under the Vienna Agreement: ISO/TS 16710-1:2024, on feedback methods for understanding how end users work with machines, and ISO 16710-2:2025, on work analysis to support design. The Vienna Agreement coordinates international and European standardisation to avoid duplication and support the adoption of common standards.

ISO/TC 159/SC 1 ‘General ergonomics principles’ addresses ergonomics principles and processes. The SC 1 has published ten International Standards. Of these standards, two have recently been published under the Vienna Agreement: ISO/TS 16710-1:2024 ‘Ergonomics methods — Part 1: Feedback method — A method to understand how end users perform their work with machines’ and ISO 16710-2:2025 ‘Ergonomics methods — Part 2: A methodology for work analysis to support design’. The Vienna Agreement optimizes standardization resources and prevents duplicate work by coordinating efforts between ISO (international) and CEN (European). Under this agreement, international standards take precedence to reduce trade barriers, meaning that any standard jointly approved as a European Standard must be adopted as a national standard by all CEN members. When CEN develops standards specifically for the European market, global ISO members can still review and vote on them, ensuring international input and paving the way for potential adoption as worldwide standards.
