The recent IEA Council meeting in Singapore was very successful. Almost all of the IEA Federated Societies were represented, either in person or by proxy. The Human Factors and Ergonomics Society of Singapore held a Symposium to celebrate their 30th Anniversary prior to the Council meeting, and members of the IEA Council were invited to participate. All of the societies present provided updates on their activities and achievements. These will be reported in a later article.
Some highlights from the Council meeting:
~ NEW MOU
A MOU between IEA, The International Society for Quality in Health Care (ISQua), and the WHO Collaborating Centre in Communication and Human Factors for Delivery of Safety and Quality Care was finalized and approved. The collaborating organizations will be involved in specific actions in the next 3 years:
- Mutual participation in international conferences and events organized by one of the three partners (ISQUA 2017 in London and IEA2018 in Florence);
- Organization of seminars on patient safety for the IEA federated societies;
- Publication of a special issue on a topic of common interest

~IEA/LIBERTY MUTUAL AWARD
Stephen Bao and colleagues were selected for the IEA/Liberty Mutual Medal for their article: “Relationships between job organisational factors, biomechanical and psychosocial exposures” – Stephen S. Bao, Jay M. Kapellusch, Andrew S. Merryweather, Mathew S. Thiese, Arun Garg, Kurt T. Hegmann & Barbara A. Silverstein,” Ergonomics, 2016;59(2):179-94. ~ NEW OPPORTUNITIES FOR SUSTAINING MEMBERSHIP
New categories for IEA Individual Sustaining Membership were approved. Please see the link at the bottom of the IEA.cc home page for more information.
~ FUTURE OF WORK TASK FORCE
A new Task Force has been formed on the Future of Work. This Task Force will be complementary to the IEA Future of Human Factors and Ergonomics Task Force, and also the International Labour Organization’s centennial initiative on “The Future of Work that We Want.” The timing offers an ideal opportunity to build on the interdependence of IEA and ILO initiatives. IEA has a long-standing MOU with the ILO to foster our mutual interests and collaborations between the agencies. We have co-published Ergonomics Checkpoints documents – in fact, the latest IEA Publication, “Ergonomics Checkpoints for Health Care Work,” is downloadable from both the ILO.org website and IEA.cc.
Juan Carlos Hiba of Argentina is the appointed Chair of the F of W Task Force. His plan addresses the need to strengthen and build on the relationships among IEA and its Federated Societies and ILO representatives. An article dedicated to this task force and its goals and activities will appear at a later date.
~ ADMINISTRATOR OF THE IEA SECRETARIAT
The IEA Council approved the engagement of Lynn Strother (Lynn Strother Consulting) as the new Administrator of the IEA Secretariat. Lynn is eminently qualified for this position. She has extensive experience in the management and administration of HFES, an organization with approximately 4500 members in the US and other countries. She is also very familiar with IEA and its structure, and has attended IEA Council meetings as an ex-officio member of the HFES delegation. She worked on the IEA 2000 meeting hosted by HFES in San Diego, and created/monitored the budget and oversaw meeting logistics. Because of her expertise, Lynn will be able to provide services at a very high level. We look forward to many years of working with her!
~ STRATEGIC OUTREACH
The IEA Executive Committee members are continuing with a strategy of outreach to existing and emerging networks of federated societies. The Council approved discussions with the BRICS-Plus network (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa) and also with ACED, the Asian Council on Ergonomics and Design with the goal of potential collaboration.
CALL FOR AWARD NOMINATIONS AND IEA2024 PROPOSALS
~ An important function of the International Ergonomics Association is to award formal recognition to members of Federated Societies who have made outstanding contributions to the field of ergonomics on an international level. All awards will be presented during the IEA2018 Triennial Congress in Florence, Italy. WE HOPE TO SEE YOU THERE!

IEA2024
~ The IEA Council of the International Ergonomics Association (IEA) invites IEA member societies to submit proposals to organize its 22nd triennial congress, to be held in 2024. Basically the congress welcomes a thousand or more delegates for 5 days of scientific and interactive meetings. A large percentage of the delegates will participate actively by presenting papers, and by organizing sessions. The basis and specifications for organizing the congress are described in the IEA Operational Procedures on IEA Triennial Congress. Proposals must be submitted by April 1st, 2018. If you are a representative of a Federated Society and interested in organizing IEA2024, please contact us for more information.
