As the IEA community we are saddened to hear about the passing of Prof. David Rempel, Professor Emeritus at the University of California, Berkeley, after an extended illness. Prof. Rempel was an IEA fellow, IEA sustaining member, an IEA Council representative for the HFES (over many years), and served in leadership positions in the IEA’s MSD Technical Committee. He was also the recipient of the 2006 IEA/Liberty Mutual Medal in Occupational Safety and Ergonomics. Prof. Rempel started the University of California Ergonomics program in 1991 and decades later was still an active member of the Center for Occupational and Environmental Health. His colleagues described him as a “unicorn”, a mythical being, whose expertise straddled across teaching, research, practice, advocacy, medicine, and engineering. He will be sorely missed by the international HFE community and particularly by those who worked with him or who had socialised with him.
